1853 Dated British Royal Navy Boarding Axe
Up fro your consideration is a classic example of a dated and maker marked british royal navy boarding axe as per the scans. It measures 14 3/4' long, 8 across at the axe head with the head and spike being almost 3/8 thick. The wood is the original wood mated to the axe head when first made and appears to be oak. The axe head is maker marked w.
Gilpin followed by a miliatry broad arrow and dated 1853. Above that is the number 430 again followde by a broad arrow. The handle is also stamped 278 followed by a broad arrow and has a hole in the handle to allow for a piece of leather to be looped through it. The axe head is extremely heavy for it's size and you would not want to be on the receiving end of it-better off jumping overboard! Thanks for lokoing in, good luck and as usualbeware of snipers-especially that tobinator guy! |
