Mens 1915 Wwi Sterling Silver 15j Hinged Military Watch

Not until the first world war would the wrist watch be considered an everyday necessity for the gentleman, although their use by troops is noted during the boer war, albeit limited. Prior to the great war, watches were considered women's jewelryâ? And too feminine for the discerning man. Wwi would change this, putting the watch on the wrists of soldiers fighting in the trenches of europe, this event having repercussions once the soldier returned home.
As one 1919 advertisement promoting wristwatches for gentlemen states, such devices were manly watches for manly men â? Any man so out of date as to consider the wristwatch effeminate need only learn the kind of men who use themâ? The fighting men, the soldiers in the world war, the military and naval men the world over, the big game hunters, the aviators, motorists, yachtsmen. Â? By the end of the 1920s, wristwatch production would surpass pocket watch output at most u.
S. Factories and swiss factories, a trend that became more pronounced over time. Here is an always desirable example of a men's sterling silver, wwi era military timepiece, made in switzerland and cased and retailed in great britain in 1915. hTis double hinged watch (i. E, both bezel and back lid are on hinges) measures 40mm end to end and 34mm in width (36mm with original onion crown). It is powered by a high quality 15 jewel, three finger bridge manual wind movement that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker david so it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The originla white porcelain enamel dial is in excellent condition with no hairlines or chips â? Very well preserved. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, arabic numerals (including a red outlined 12) original skeleton-style hands and a gently recessed seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and sweep seconds hand. As wiht many of these wwi period watches it is not signed with a makers name. The oslid glass crystal is bevel edged and in excellent shape, possibly original. The case is very nice, a double hinged, three-piece example that is. 925 quality sterling silver and complete with solid wire lugs.
It is in great to excellent condition wtih just a couple little marks on the bezel below the seconds dial. The brass onion crown (once nickel or silver plated) is in very good shape and operates smoothly. Turning the watch over i note that the bcak lid is clean and solid with no wear or engravingsin great plus order.

Peeking inside i find a clean, nickel finished 15 jewel swiss, manual wind movement with three finger bridge. The inside of the lid is stamped jl. 925 â? U â?

U with case referenec number below. To translate, this means that hte maker jlâ? Produced this case in sterling silver (. 925) in the year 1915 (date code u). This cleaned, oiled and regulated watch winds and ests smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time.

Comes fitted on a 14mm men's length tan pigskin strap with chrome silver buckle, especially designed with fold-over ends to accommodate this solid (wire) lug watch. I think the band color goes nicely with the coloring of the numbers and hands but if you prefer a black pigskin strap let me know and i'll put it on instead. So then, that's the skinny on this honest and original ww1 british market military watch â? Thanks fro taking the time to read my description!
